Some of state’s best surge into OGA Junior Boys and Girls Championship semifinals

The semifinals are set in the Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Boys and Girls Championship and they should be a great showcase of the talent throughout this golf crazy state.

Medalist Parker Payne of Norman reached the semifinals with victories of 3 and 1 over Austin Mueller of Yukon and a tough 1 up victory over Mason Haley of Enid Wednesday at KickingBird Golf Course in Edmond. He will meet Benton Manly of Tulsa, who tied for second in stroke play at 2 under. Manly defeated Matthew Kendrick of Tulsa 4 and 3 and Ben Lathrop of Oklahoma City 2 and 1.

The other semifinal pits Parker Sands of Edmond against Sam Morris of Tulsa. Sands got there with a 4 and 3 victory over Preston Albee of Choctaw and a 5 and 4 win over Nick Friedrichsen of Bixby. Morris rolled to a 6 and 4 victory over Beau Broermann of Tulsa and took down Cameron Cheek of Owasso 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.

The girls semifinals features three state high school champions and one who is not in high school yet.

Stroke play champion Natalie Blonien of Altus, the current Class 5A champion, edged Kate Moore of Tulsa 2 and 1 and then overcame Sophia Lefler of Tulsa 4 and 3. She will face Rylee Roberts of Edmond and a past Class 6A champion. Roberts cruised past Abbie Justiz of Arcadia 7 and 6 and then edged Harlow Gregory of Norman 2 and 1.

The other semifinal pits defending champion and No. 2 seed Juliana Hong of Norman against 14-year-old Evyn Cannon, who will be a freshman at Deer Creek in the fall. Hong, the current Class 6A state champion, rolled to a 6 and 5 victory over McKenna Tatum of Edmond and then defeated Syrah Javed of Norman 2 and 1. Cannon got by Nikki Pitts of Stillwater 2 and 1 and then rolled past Reagan Plank of Owasso 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals.

Semifinal matches begin with the boys 14-15 age group at 7:30 a.m. Coleman Sides of Tulsa will take on Own Mitchell of Edmond in one match followed by Ainslie Stanford III of Edmond against Grady Thompson of Edmond. Blonien faces Roberts at 7:46 a.m. followed by the other three semifinals and finals matches around noon. The event is open to the public.

The winners of the  boys 15-18 receives a berth in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. on July 22-27 while the girls winner earns a spot in the U.S. Girls Junior July 15-20 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.
