Sooners, Cowboys begin play in Big 12 Match Play Tournament

HOCKLEY, TexasOklahoma State and Oklahoma will head back to the state of Texas this week to take part in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, which will be contested at Houston Oaks Monday through Wednesday.

In its fourth year of existence, the event will consist of three days of action at the par-71, 7,007-yard layout. The first two-plus days will feature five sessions of pool play to determine the matches for the final session. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.

During pool play, each team will play four matches with three points being awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. The final-session matches will be set according to point totals in each pool.

The Cowboys will be the No. 2 seed and will be joined in Pool B by Texas, TCU, Baylor and Iowa State.

OSU finished as the event’s runner-up last year after finishing with a 2-0-2 mark. The Cowboys tied Baylor in the title match, splitting the six individual matches, The Bears took the title after winning the hole differential tiebreaker.

Seven players will make the trip for the Cowboys with seniors Eugenio Chacarra, Aman Gupta, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Leo Oyo being joined by juniors Brian Stark, Dillon Stewart and sophomore Jonas Baumgartner.

The top-seeded Sooners will face West Virginia Monday morning followed by Kansas State in the afternoon. Oklahoma will take Chris Gotterup, Logan McAllister, Jaxon Dowell, Patrick Welch, Drew Goodman, Stephen Campbell Jr. and Ben Lorenz to the matches.
