The Wrap: Gotterup notches one for OU as PGA Tour Bedlam continues; Trans-Miss begins; Blonien continues strong summer
Last week it was Oklahoma State’s Viktor Hovland winning on the PGA Tour. This week it was University of Oklahoma grad Chris Gotterup picking up his third PGA Tour victory this year. What else connects them other than having attended colleges in the state? Both are members of Oak Tree National in Edmond, although neither currently reside in the state. Congrats to Chris. And OSU’s Preston Stout shot 14-under to tie for 15th. That’s a $143,000 payday if he was a pro and his game is obviously PGA Tour ready. At this time, he had indicated he fully intends to return to Stillwater for a final season.
On the Champions Tour, Padraig Harrington picked up his third U.S. Senior Open and is moving into the extended dominance of a Bernhard Langer, Hale Irwin or Gil Morgan. Locally, Tracy Phillips, Tag Ridings and Bo Van Pelt all missed the cut, Phillips by a single shot. Read more here.Â
On the amateur side, OU’s Ryder Cowan tied his singles match Sunday in the Palmer Cup in Ireland. The International team of collegiate men and women edged the U.S. team 30 1/2 to 29 1/2 to win the competition. Cowan planned to jet back to the U.S. to compete in The Trans-Mississippi Amateur which begins with practice rounds today at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. The 72-hole event has 18-holes of competition Tuesday through Friday. Here are the pairings for the first round.
In the 124th North and South Amateur at Pinehurst last week, Natalie Blonien of Altus followed up her victories in the Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play and Match Play championships by easily making the cut for match play and winning her first-round match. She will begin play Tuesday in the Women’s Western Amateur at River Forest Country Club in Chicago.
