Transfer Jordan Wilson powers UCO in debut at Houston Classic

HOUSTON (Feb. 12) – Jordan Wilson fired consecutive rounds of even-par 72 in his Central Oklahoma debut to put himself and the Bronchos near the team lead after first-day play in the season-opening Houston Classic Monday.

Wilson – who transferred to UCO from Oklahoma State at the semester break – is one shot behind Midwestern State’s Seth Bearden in the individual standings, while the Bronchos are four shots down in the team standings.

The Mustangs finished with a 596 total after Monday’s 36-hole day. UCO is at 600, with Harding and Henderson State both at 604 headed to Tuesday’s final round in the 15-team tournament. Among other Oklahoma schools, Oklahoma Christian is in fifth place, Cameron 12th and Southern Nazarene 13th.

The Bronchos also got rounds of 76-75 from Bennett Baldwin, while Nick Canales shot 83-69, Baylor Bostick 80-79 and Ross Taylor 77-85. Evan Griffith shot 77-76 competing as an individual medalist.

Wilson birdied is first hole of the day in the morning round and answered a sixth-hole bogey with another birdie on the par-3 seventh hole to make the turn at one-under 35. He reeled off eight straight pars to stay there before bogeying No. 18 in his opening-round 72.

The junior from Edmond, who won the Class 6A state championship while a freshman at Edmond North, got to 2-under in the afternoon with birdies on Nos. 4 and 6 in carding a front-nine 34. Wilson bogeyed Nos. 10 and 12 to fall back to even par before finishing with six consecutive pars for a second straight 72.

Canales made a triple bogey and two doubles in his morning 83 before knocking 14 shots off that in the afternoon. The redshirt freshman birdied four holes against a lone bogey in a second-round 69 that was the best score of the day.
