Tseng boosts Tulsa into third-place finish at Texas State Invitational
KYLE, Texas – Top 10 finishes by Lorena Tseng and Johanna Samuelsson led the Tulsa women’s golf team to a third-place team performance at the Texas State Invitational Tuesday at the par-71 Plum Creek Golf Course. Oral Roberts shot a final-round 305 to finish in sixth place.
Tulsa carded a final round 298 to finish the 54-hole event with a 23-over par score of 875, while the freshman Tseng had her fifth top-10 finish in six tournaments this season, placing third overall today. Senior Johanna Samuelsson had a 10th place performance for her top performance of the season.
Tseng had her best score of the three rounds with a 2-under par 69 today for a 3-under par 210 total. She sank birdie putts on the par-5 11th hole, the par-4 14th and the par-3 17th hole and had just one bogey on the day. Samuelsson shot a final round score of 74 for a 3-over par 216 total score.
First-year player Sammy Liu, who joined the Tulsa program in January, had a 25th place performance in her first collegiate event. She shot a final round 77 for a 9-over par 222. Fellow freshman ShaeLee Scarberry had a final score of 227 for 45th place, while senior Olivia Jackson finished in 58th place with a score of 231. Both Scarberry and Jackson turned in rounds of 78 today.
Tseng has now turned in first, second, third, fourth and ninth-place finishes in five of her first six collegiate events.
As a team, the Hurricane has finished among the top-5 in four tournaments this year, marking the most since Tulsa had four top-5 finishes for the entire 2012-13 campaign. Tulsa has four tournaments remaining in the regular season.
UTSA claimed the team title with an 854 score, while Sam Houston’s State’s Hannah Alberto won medalist honors with a 6-under par score of 207.
Tulsa will be in action later this month, Feb. 24-26, at the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.
ORU’s sixth place finish is its highest since taking fifth at the Payne Stewart Invite September 10-11. Sarah Bell was ORU’s top finisher for the fourth time in six tournaments to start her collegiate career. Bell earned her third top 10 finish, while Isabella Caamal finished 11th for the second highest finish of her career and her third top 20 finish.
