Filed in the one-that-got-away category, Peter Vitali of Oklahoma City was in contention to win the senior division of the PGA National Club Championship going into the 17th hole in the final round of the 54-hole event which concluded Dec. 19 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

After hitting his drive, he found a Titleist with red numbers and a line sitting in the fairway, 79 yards from the hole. Unfortunately it wasn’t his red Titleist, which he didn’t realize until after hitting it on the green.

Vitali, the reigning champion in the Oklahoma Golf Association Senior State Amateur and Senior Stroke Play Championship, took his two-stroke penalty and dropped back into a tie for fifth, two strokes behind winner Tray Tyner of Riverhill (Texas) CC.
