Callison bows out in U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
Jeremy Callison of Grove, the only one of five Oklahomans in the field for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship to reach match play, lost his first-round match Tuesday morning 3 and 1 to Brett Viboch of Sacramento, Calif.
Callison took a 2-up lead early but the match was halted for darkness. As play resumed Tuesday, Viboch took command, winning 5 of 9 holes to take a 3 up lead through 12. Callison battled back with a birdie on 13 and another on 15 to cut the deficit to one up. But Viboch birdied 16 to go 2 up, then was credited with a double eagle 2 to Callison’s birdie 4 on the par-5 17th, but there may well have been a concession involved.
The Mid-Amateur Championship is being held at Sankaty Head Golf Club in Siasconset, Mass. The delayed two rounds of stroke play were concluded Monday. Missing the cut were Chris Noel of Tulsa, Mike Hearne of Yukon, Preston Wilkins of Tulsa and Austin Schmidt of Tulsa.
