Cheek, Cannon are victors in OJGT’s Ponca City Spring Championship

Cameron Cheek of Owasso won a playoff with Coltrane Mittag of Ashland, Neb., Thursday after both golfers tied at 6-under 138 through 36 holes of the Ponca City Spring Championship on the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour.

On the girls side, 13-year-old Evyn Cannon of Edmond, a star for Oklahoma’s PGA Junior League national team, made her OJGT debut a memorable one, shooting consecutive rounds of 75 to win by six shots over Juliana Hong of Norman and McKenna Tatum of Edmond.

Cheek shot rounds of 71-67 while Mittag shot 67-71. Third place was a tie between Benton Manly of Tulsa (74-69) and C.J. Phillips of Edmond (73-70). Ben Lathrop of Oklahoma City was fifth at even-par 144 (71-73).

Hong led the girls with a first-round 74 but closed with 82 while Tatum shot 80-76. In fourth was Emmerson Doyle of Cabot, Ark., at 158 (82-76), while tied for fifth were Petyon Coburn of Broken Arrow (80-79), Cara Cummins of Oklahoma City (79-80) and Savannah Thessing of Nixa, Mo., (77-82).
