Cowan grabs lead in OGA Stroke Play Championship, pursuers precocious

It’s no surprise that Ryder Cowan, the state’s top-ranked junior heading to Oklahoma in the fall, is leading the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at The Territory after a sparkling opening round of 7-under-par 65 Tuesday.

It’s not a shock that Oklahoma State’s Jordan Wilson of Edmond and UMKC’s Mesa Falleur of Muskogee are right on his heels with rounds of 5-under 67.

It is a bit of an eye-opener that two others right in the hunt are ages 14 and 13 respectively.

Emerson Majma of Edmond, 14, shot 67 to tie Wilson and Falleur for second. Chase Hughes, of Oklahoma City, 13, shot 68 to tie his older brother Rhett Hughes, an incoming freshman at Nebraska, for fifth place.

Majma and Chase Hughes have been hugely successful on U.S. Kids Golf and have been cornerstones of the success of the Oklahoma team in the PGA Junior League. It looks like the leap from those junior events to competing against seasoned collegiate and amateur players is going to be a short one.

Tied for seventh at 3-under are Ty Hyatt of Stillwater, Bryce Newton of Edmond and William McDonald of Oklahoma City. The field will be cut to the low 30 and ties following the second round Wednesday, with the final round Thursday.

Cowan made eight birdies against one bogey. He closed his round with consecutive birdies while shooting 32 on the back nine.
