Cowgirls grab first-round lead in Lady Puerto Rico Classic
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Three Cowgirl golfers in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard has the Oklahoma State women’s golf team leading a field composed of seven other top-50 ranked teams at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
The Cowgirls were led by the freshman duo of Hailey Jones and Isabella Fierro who are tied for third place after carding a 2-under par 70. Jones turned in a bogey-free round to continue her hot start to the spring as all four of her rounds have been even or under par so far. After two early bogeys, Fierro used back-to-back birdies to close out the front nine and set herself up to move under par.
Lianna Bailey posted a 1-under 71 to join Fierro and Jones in the top-10. Bailey is in a tie for sixth place with three other golfers. All three Cowgirls are chasing Sifat Sagoo of Purdue who is atop the leaderboard at 4-under par.
Freshman Maja Stark started off strong when she birdied her first hole as a Cowgirl and finished the day with a 74.
Han-Hsuan Yu turned in an 8-over par 80 and is tied for 67th place. Playing as an individual, junior Emma Whitaker is tied for 50th place.
The Cowgirls 285 (-3) was the only under par score of the day. They lead the rest of the field by three strokes with Purdue and Virginia Tech tied for second at even par.
The Cowgirls will tee off again Monday morning at 6 a.m. CT and look to build upon their lead before finishing the tournament on Tuesday.
