Gupta, Eckroat have Cowboys close in Hawaii
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play on Thursday at the Amer Ari Invitational with a 12-under 276 to stand alone in fourth place at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
The Cowboys finished the day just two shots behind tournament leaders Texas and Georgia Tech at the par-72, 7,074-yard layout. Arizona State came in one shot clear of OSU and alone in third place.
Georgia Tech’s Tyler Strafaci grabbed the individual lead, firing an 8-under 64 to open play.
The Cowboy starting five was led by Aman Gupta, who posted a 7-under 65 to share second place with Texas’ Cole Hammer. The sophomore began his round at the eighth and made the first of his nine birdies on the day at the ninth. He would put together a bogey-free back nine that featured five birdies for a 5-under 31.
Gupta moved to 9-under for the day after posting birdies at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 before closing his round with bogeys at the fifth and seventh to get to his 7-under score.
Junior Austin Eckroat posted a sub-70 round as well, carding a 69 to stand in a tie for 17th place.
Sophomore Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and senior Ferdinand Müller each signed for 71s to finish the day tied for 38th place.
Freshman Brian Stark carded a 74 and stands in a tie for 80th place.
Freshman Dillon Stewart is competing individually and posted a 72 to share 51st place.
OSU will begin its second round tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (HST) and will be grouped with Texas, Georgia Tech and Arizona State. Complete scores and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
