A number of golf courses renovated and restored by golf course architect Tripp Davis and Associates (TDA) were recognized by GOLF Magazine in its new best courses in each state rankings list for 2020-2021. The Oklahoma listings and all the state rankings by Golf Magazine can be found here.
In Oklahoma, Oak Tree National in Edmond was ranked at #2 and Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in Nichols Hills came in at #4. In New York, Armonk’s Whippoorwill Club was ranked #17 while Oak Hills in San Antonio, Texas was listed at #7.
The top five in Oklahoma by Golf Magazine were Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, Oak Tree National, Karsten Creek in Stillwater, OKC G&CC and The Patriot in Owasso. Southern Hills was the only course in the state to make Golf Magazine’s new list of Top 100 courses, coming in at No. 28. The top 100 list is here.
“I am pleased to know that our work has helped so many fine courses around the country be recognized by GOLF Magazine in their first ever best in state rankings,” said Davis. “To be listed as one of the top courses in a particular state is gratifying. All of these clubs named best in state had differing objectives and very different types of architecture to work with. We always work to adapt and it’s nice to see we are doing that with recognized results.”
As one GOLF Magazine rater commented, “One of the most important restoration/renovation efforts completed in 2020 was from golf architect Tripp Davis at Oklahoma Golf & Country Club. Long ago, midwest associate Perry Maxwell had Alister MacKenzie onsite at the property which meanders up and over its rippling topography. Maxwell’s sensibilities in design are preserved well, particularly on the sweeping dogleg left par four fourth hole. Dedicated students of Maxwell strategy could easily cause a slow play delay examining that green and approach.”
