David Meyers raked in his sixth consecutive victory in the 48th U.C. Ferguson Classic on Tuesday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Meyers, a senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, matched the Stars’ record for wins in a season set the mark for longest individual win streak. OCU, ranked eighth in NAIA men’s golf, took fourth place in the team standings.
Meyers became the first two-time individual winner in the tournament history since Texas Lutheran’s Jason Lamb in 1988 and 1989. The other two-time medalist in the U.C. Ferguson Classic was Oklahoma State’s Andy Dillard in 1982 and ’83.
Meyers equaled James Marchesani’s six wins and surpassed Marchesani’s five wins in a row during 2013-14. He increased his OCU record career win total to 11.
“This week was an interesting one for sure,” Meyers said. “I struggled my first 13 holes of the tournament and then seemed to find my game towards the end of my first and the start of the second round. I putted really well this week which was definitely the key to scoring out there as the greens were tough.”
Meyers won by five shots and tied the finest score in tournament history with a 69-62-66–197. Oklahoma Christian’s Bruno Buccolo in 2006 and Sam Johnston in 2012 shot the previous top scores in tournament history.
Meyers sank his second eagle of the tournament on the par-5, 522-yard 16th hole. Meyers knocked in four birdies to finish with 17 for the tournament. Meyers matched his career-best score against par at 16 shots under par, which he shot in the Southern Plains Intercollegiate on Sept. 14-15, 2020 and the Ottawa-Arizona Invitational on Jan. 29-30, 2018 in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
“It was nice to get another win,” Meyers said. “The boys are looking forward to conference, and I’m sure that’s going be a great event for the team to get ready for nationals.”
Oklahoma City finished fourth with a 292-272-276–840. Bellevue (Neb.) wrapped up the team win.
The Stars’ Bosten Benn, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., turned in a 72-71-72–215 to go with 11 birdies. Dalton Daniel, a senior from Newcastle, Okla., contributed a 79-70-67–216 while dropping in 10 birdies, and Mason Mikeska, a junior from Waco, Texas, carded a 77-69-71–217 with 10 birdies. Bo Robbins, a freshman from Guthrie, Okla., provided OCU with a 74-73-72–219 and 12 birdies.
Robbie Sager paced the OCU Blue team with a 69-72-75–216, while Will Fore added a 74-73-75–222. Quinton Tews finished the tournament with his career-best round, posting a 78-78-68–224, and Ben Thionnet had a 75-76-75–226. Carson Breckenridge finished with an 80-73-86–239.
The Sooner Athletic Conference Championships take place April 26-27 at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
