Olivares, UCO take third in Jekyll Island Intercollegiate
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (Oct. 19) – Susana Olivares fired a 3-under-par 69 to finish among the individual leaders in sparking Central Oklahoma to a third-place showing at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate that wrapped up Tuesday.
The Bronchos shot a final-round 304 to finish with a 36-hole total of 607 at the 6,043-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club. Columbus State won the 17-team event at 589, followed by Carson-Newman (595) and UCO.
Olivares’ closing gem was the best round of the tournament and allowed the sophomore standout to finish third in the standings with a 145 total after she opened with a 76 Monday.
The Bronchos also got 78s from Emma Shelley and Taylor Towers, while Madison O’Dell shot 79 and Mika Ramos 83. It was the final tournament to the fall season for UCO, which finished in the top-three in three of its four events.
“Susana was just outstanding today,” head coach Michael Bond said. “She hit the ball beautifully and really putted well. Overall it wasn’t the day we were looking for, but we made good strides in the last three tournaments and are looking forward to the spring.”
Olivares started final-round play on No. 2 and opened with five straight pars before bogeying No. 7. She got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 eighth, then added birdies on the par-5 11th, par-5 15th and par-3 17th before finishing with two pars.
It was the third top-10 finish of the fall for Olivares, who has now placed in the top 10 in 15 of 20 career tournaments with the Bronchos.
