After a four-hour plus delay due to lightning and flooding, Trent Rommann hit his tee shot to 10 feet on the par-3 15th hole, leading to a birdie that propelled him to victory in the South Central PGA Club Professional Championship Tuesday at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

Rommann, an assistant professional at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, was tied at 6-under with Blake Bowman of Pryor, a regional representative for Yamaha Golf Cars, when play resumed about 6:20 p.m. after golfers had been called off the course just after 2 p.m. due to lightning in the area. A torrential rain came in about 4 p.m. and just being able to get back to the 15th tee was problematic for a time as floodwaters poured through the course.

Torrential rain brought floodwaters delaying play.

Rommann finished at 6-under for 54 holes, while Bowman bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes to drop back to 4-under, where he finished tied with Kyley Tetley of the Golf Studio in Bixby and Jeff Combe, director of golf at Tulsa Country Club.

Those four each earned spots in the 2018 Club Professional Championship June 17-20 at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif. The fifth and final spot came down to a playoff between four of the section’s most decorated pros in host professional Tim Fleming, Cary Cozby of Southern Hills Country Club, Mark Fuller of Surrey Hills Country Club and Michael Boyd, who has a golf school at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow.

Boyd seized the last spot with a birdie on the first playoff hole to earn his fourth trip to the CPC. He has never been one of the top 20 finishers in that event who earn berths in the PGA Championship, and has never played in a major championship despite a career that included a stint on the PGA Tour.

“This is my best route to playing in a major,” said Boyd. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It didn’t look like it was going to happen today,”

Boyd was pessimistic after his third shot on the par-5 13th hole hit a cart path and sailed out of bounds, leading to a double bogey. Two holes later, however, he swung an 8-iron on the 153-yard 15th and watched the shot land just short and plop into the hole for his second career hole-in-one in competition and sixth overall.

“I was still trying, but I thought I was just playing for grins after the double bogey,” Boyd said. “Then I make a hole-in-one and I’m back in it. Golf’s a funny game.”

While Boyd, Combe, Tetley and Rommann have all played in the national event previously, it will be a new experience for Bowman, who was the 36-hole leader at 7-under but couldn’t find his swing after the long layoff.

“It was my goal coming in here and I’m really excited,” Bowman said. “The only other national event I’ve played in was the 2007 U.S. Amateur, and it’s kind of weird because that event was also in California and qualifying was in Oklahoma City. I told my wife I took that as an omen.”

Tetley shot the day’s low round of 67 to move up to 4-under on the par-71 Perry Maxwell-designed course. Combe and Rommann each closed with a 71, while Boyd shot 72 and Bowman 74.

Rommann has nearly advanced to the PGA Championship in a previous CPC appearance, chipping in on the final hole to reach a seven-man playoff for the final spots which he didn’t win. This time he hopes he’s one shot better.

In the playoff for those who finished at 2-under to determine the order for alternates, Fleming is first alternate followed by Cozby, Fuller and Brent Wilcoxen of Jenks.
