Scissortail reopens, completes massive renovations at WinStar Resort

The state gets back another of its top courses today as the Scissortail Course at WinStar Resort in Thackerville reopens to the resort guests and public. As was the case with its sister course Redbud which reopened in June, Scissortail has been closed for more than a year for an extensive renovation of all existing turfgrass on fairways and greens.

Due to high salinity in the watering sources, WinStar’s courses had compacted fairways and greens with shriveled roots and frequent mass instances of winter kill.

To combat the issue, the fairways were plowed 12 inches deep, then had two inches of sand compost added after which they were tilled a second time. Following the remedial work, new irrigation lines were installed. The fairways were then sodded with Tahoma 31 Bermuda while the greens, which also underwent extensive rebuilding to alleviate compaction, were sodded with TifEagle ultradwarf Bermuda.

Between the entirely new turfgrass, several bunkers and tee boxes were addressed and a lake was added on the 18h hole. Rod Addington, whose company Anera Golf oversaw the project, said a reverse osmosis system added to the irrigation will ensure the salinity doesn’t rebuild.

“The reaction to Redbud reopening has been very positive and we know Scissortail will be at least that good,” Addington said.
