Shangri-La Resort to add Activity Center, offers low temp special
Shangri-La Resort in Afton has announced it is building an Activity Park near its new hotel that will include a range of both indoor and outdoor activities.
Indoors will be two bowling lanes, a coffee bar, a liquor bar, ping pong and pool tables, golf simulators, a shooting simulator, and a 40-seat movie theater and/or video conferencing center.
The outside will feature tennis courts, pickleball courts, sand volleyball and a whiffle ball stadium built to resemble a miniature Fenway Park.
The $5.5 million project will commence in February and is expected to be completed in late summer.
Mike Williams, the director of communications and government relations for Shangri-La, said the addition will help with the resort’s push to help guests recognize Shangri-La as an ideal vacation spot for more of the calendar year.
“We’re trying to facilitate our goal of making this a year-round destination,” Williams aid. “We often have great weather in March and April and in the fall through November and this just gives our guests more great activity options.”
The facilities will be open to members and those staying at the resort hotel. Shangri-La has 27 holes of golf and has been considering whether to add a separate par-3 course.
The new center will also feature a pond in front of the hotel which will have an exact replica of the 20,000-pound anchor from the battleship USS Oklahoma, which went down with 429 crew members at Pearl Harbor after being torpedoed by Japanese torpedo bomber airplanes.
Shangri-Low Winter Special: Through the end of Central Standard Time, the resort is offering a special on golf rounds in which customers can call in and identify the forecasted low temperature for a particular day by the National Weather Service and pay that amount for green fees on that day. So if the day starts off at 29 degrees but warms to 62, the rate is $29. Call the pro shop for more details.
