FORT WORTH —Oklahoma placed three golfers in the top 10, but came up one stroke short of No. 12 Stanford at the 54-hole Colonial Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday. Stanford came from off the pace with a blazing 11-under round Tuesday to edge the Sooners by a shot. Oklahoma State finished tied for third with Wake Forest.
“It was a great week on a historical golf course,” head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We played well this week and just got beat by a very good Stanford team that played unbelievably today.”
The Sooners entered the day two shots back of Pepperdine, but quickly erased the deficit as Jaxon Dowell and Chris Gotterup birdied the first hole. Stanford (-3, 837) shot up the leaderboard, but the Sooners had a chance to tie after a flurry of late birdies. Dowell’s 7-foot birdie putt on the final hole wouldn’t fall to forge a tie.
Chris Gotterup and Logan McAllister shared third, marking the first time in seven events that OU teammates earned top-five finishes at the same tournament. Dowell shot even-par 70 Tuesday to finish tied for seventh in his collegiate debut, helping the Sooners to their second runner-up finish of the year.
“Jaxon (Dowell) started his career off very nicely and did everything he possibly could to help us have a chance,” Hybl added. “Logan (McAllister) and Chris (Gotterup) continue to lead us and they’re competing at such a high level. I can’t go without mentioning Drew’s (Goodman) great first round as well, and we know that as a freshman he’ll continue to be good for us moving forward.”
Gotterup shot 68-71-68 at the par-70 course en route to his second consecutive third-place finish. Defending Colonial Collegiate champion McAllister fired a team-low 65 Tuesday after opening the tournament with back-to-back 71s to move up 15 spots in the final round, securing his seventh top-five finish as a Sooner. Dowell shot 67-72-70 to finish in a tie for seventh in his debut. Goodman finished tied for 41st at 9 over and Patrick Welch closed with a 72.
Oklahoma State carded a closing 1-under 279 to finish at 3-over 843 and tied with Wake Forest. Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan carded an 11-under total of 199 to finish six shots clear of the field in the individual race.
Junior Brian Stark continued his strong fall, finishing alone in sixth place for OSU after carding a 67 during his final round to finish at 2-under 208. The Cowboy junior posted a pair of birdies on his outward nine en route to an even-par 35. He birdied the 10th and 12th to move to 2-under for the day before carding his lone bogey of the second nine at No. 13. He would tack on birdies at the 16th and the 18th to get to his 3-under total.
The finish marked the third consecutive top 10 for Stark, who tied for third place at The Carmel Cup and shared fifth place at the Fighting Illini Invitational.
Senior Eugenio Chacarra closed with a 69 to move into a tie for 13th place at 212. He was joined at 2-over by senior Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, who carded a closing 71 to get to his 212 tally.
Senior Aman Gupta made it three Cowboys at 212 after signing for a 72 on Tuesday. Senior Leo Oyo also carded a 72 during his final round to finish at 214 and tied for 25th place.
Both teams will compete in the Big 12 Match Play Championship Oct. 11-13 at the Golf Club of Houston Oaks.
